Degrees Available: Bachelor of Arts

Delve into the world of film and visual media and prepare for a career in filmmaking, non-print journalism or media criticism.

Whether you’re interested in avant-garde video, narrative feature films, or the politics and rhetoric of world cinema, our cinema studies program will sharpen your research and writing skills while helping you develop your visual, creative and technical abilities.

In a world increasingly shaped by moving pictures, you’ll learn to see film as an artistic medium, a cultural expression, a rhetorical device, a technical production and a commercial enterprise. Our courses provide a foundation for understanding cinema and its relation to culture, history, technology and aesthetics. You’ll discover how to analyze moving images, produce research and make art.

As you take multiple approaches to cinema study, you’ll explore the practical challenges of audiovisual representation and interpretation. The interdisciplinary breadth of our course offerings — and the variety of national cinemas the program includes — will equip you to question and respond to those representations.

Along the way, you’ll have access to film festivals, research opportunities, and professional internships with organizations like Capital Community Media. These experiences will set the stage for a rewarding career in a field that touches us all.
